Brighton Homeopathy

Your First Visit
Homeopaths do work in different ways, and follow different methods. I have been trained in various different methods of working, and I will choose whichever seems best for you as an individual. I will want to find out about you, and many homeopaths do this by asking questions. I need to have a 'picture' of who you are so that I can match the closest remedy in your treatment. The ideal is to find the one remedy (among many thousands) which specifically matches who you are, and what your symptoms are. Again, the number and type of questions partly depends on whether the reason you are consulting me is a short-lived condition which you have only recently noticed (an ‘acute’ illness such as a cough, cold, sore throat, headache, muscle strain); or whether it is for something which you have had for many years, or which is a very serious condition affecting several organ systems (a ‘chronic’ condition). Even for an acute condition, if I have never seen you before, I will need at least half an hour to find out enough about you to prescribe a remedy. For a chronic condition, the first interview is likely to take up to two hours, and you will need to return for follow-up consultations (half to one hour each) probably every four to six weeks for a time.

There are usually a lot of questions, and, while I usually ask you to write down any information before you visit, it is advisable for you to think about things before you visit. The kind of information I need to help in the selection of an appropriate remedy is:

  • What is concerning you about your health?
  • How long have you had this condition?
  • When did it start?
  • Is there anything which makes it better or worse?
  • How does this condition affect you?
  • What kind of medical history do you have – how often are you ill, and what sort of complaints do you have? And your parents, and grandparents?
  • Are you currently taking any medication or using essential oils?
  • I will also go through from ‘top to toe’, noting any symptoms you have, or have had, in the various areas of the body throughout your life.

While each homeopath works differently, these are the sort of questions I ask at the first interview. There may well be others. If you are not happy to answer questions about a particular area of your life, that is fine, but obviously I can only work on the information you give me, so the answers you give need to be honest. I will appreciate as much detail as you are able to give me in the answers, and all the information you give me is confidential. (I practise according to the Society of Homeopaths’ Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.)

At the end of the interview, there is always time if you have any particular questions to ask me, either about homeopathy in general, or your treatment. Quite probably, I will want to think about the remedy to prescribe for a day or two – but sometimes I may prescribe at the time. The cost of any homeopathic remedies prescribed is usually included in the consultation fee. Finally, if you have come with a chronic condition, I would like to make a follow-up appointment with you.
